ANC members wear their shirts, but are they really one with the party? That’s the question from former party president Thabo Mbeki.
He says decades after Nelson Mandela highlighted the growing trust deficit between the people and the party, what’s really changed.
“So the meeting discussed this question, has that problem been solved, of people who enter the ANC, wear ANC t-shirts and they say viva ANC, viva and they know all of the songs and do all of that but are they ANC,” he said.
“And so we, the provincial secretary said let us look at a report that was given by the then secretary-general of the ANC, Gwede Mantashe in 2017 about the state of the ANC and that in reality what Gwede Mantashe sent 20 years after Madiba had spoken was to repeat what Madiba had said.”
Mbeki also says the ANC can’t achieve its objective of renewal then the issues facing the country won’t be resolved.
