1,448 road deaths recorded over the festive season

Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula has released the 2020 festive season road statistics. The country recorded 1,448 fatalities from 1,210 crashes.

This represents a 7 per cent decline in fatalities and a 10.3 per cent decline in crashes, year-on-year.

The highest number of crashes and fatalities occurred on the N3 near Harrismith, N2 near Idutywa, N1 near Modimolle, R37 Mecklenburg and N12 near Potchefstroom.

Over 500 traffic officers tested positive for COVID-19 and 33 have died.

Mbalula said the COVID-19 vaccine will be given to taxi drivers, metro police officers and other frontline workers. The department is currently preparing for the Easter peak travel period.
