Top 5 Tips to take care of your wig this summer

What we love about summer is the opportunity to spend many days under the sun enjoying the warm weather in the company of family and friends. We also know that sun, heat, humidity, swimming, and beach time can be harsh on our hair and sometimes we notice that by the end of the season, our beautiful Brazilian wig ends up losing all its original glamour.

There are many things you can do to prevent this from happening and that is why we prepared this special guide for you with our top 5 tips to care of your wig this summer, so that your Brazilian hair can be protected from any damage, while you enjoy summertime to the fullest.

1. Moisturize. Keeping your hair moisturized is the secret to maintaining its natural glow and silkiness. This is the first and most important tip for all human hair wigs. If you feel your hair is getting dry and dull under the constant sun, heat and humidity, try to use a hair mask once a week at home to nourish your hair and keep it healthy.

Normally, during summertime we increase the frequency of washing our wigs, so it is important to use mild, highly-moisturizing and sulphate-free shampoo and conditioner and be gentle when massaging the hair. Always rinse the hair in cold water at the end to lock in moisture, squeeze out excess water with your fingers and pat dry with a towel. Do not try to brush the hair while it is wet, because it will increase the risk of breaking the strands.

2. Gently comb– Wind, humidity and heat can make you hair a little dryer and/or frizzy, which can also cause tangling. Combing your hair at least twice a day with a wide-tooth comb will keep it smooth and reduce the chances of excess tangling, which might lead to shedding.

How to comb: carefully brush your hair with a wide-tooth comb from the tips to the roots. Section off a small portion of hair, hold the section in the middle, then start combing at the bottom of the hair slowly working upwards towards the wig cap until the entire section of hair is smooth and tangle-free. Never brush when the hair is wet as this may cause breakage. It is always better to brush before washing or when the hair is dry.

3. Add a little bit of oil – Another important tip to prevent excessive tangling is to apply a tiny amount of hair oil after every wash. Remember, too much serum can also have the opposite effect: it will make your hair look dull and prone to tangling. Also, the more product you have on your hair, the more you will need to wash, which will shorten the lifespan of your wig – therefore use just a tiny amount of oil or of any leave-in product

4. Protect from heat and sun – with your hair getting a bit frizzier due to humidity, you might feel the need to increase the frequency of styling it, which means more heat being applied to your wig. If possible, try to set your styling tools like blow-dryers, hair straighteners or curling iron on low to medium heat to avoid damage and use a heat protection spray prior to styling the wig – this will keep your Brazilian hair healthier and extend its lifespan.

It is also important to try to hide your Brazilian wig as much as possible from the sun, so wearing a glamourous hat while you are exposed to direct sun is a brilliant idea. You can also apply a sunscreen spray specially formulated for human hair to protect your beautiful wig.

5. Avoid swimming with your Brazilian wig. As you probably already know, chlorine water is not human hair’s best friend. Also, if you frequently swim with your wig, you will need to go through the washing and styling process more often and the more you wash and heat style your wig, the shorter it will last.

Even with all the love and care, we might still feel that our Brazilian wigs don’t look the same at the end of summer.
