Thuli Madonsela’s powerful doccie comes to Showmax

Fresh from her successful climb to the peak of Kilimanjaro, Thuli Madonsela has grabbed more headlines after her critically acclaimed documentary finally made its way to Showmax. Whispering Truth to Power, the documentary about Thuli’s final year as South Africa’s public protector, is one of the most riveting films to come out of South Africa in recent years.

Commentators have hailed it as a progressive and thought-provoking feature, and it ranks at the very top of the list of “must-see South African documentaries” alongside the likes of Miners Shot Down and Everything Must Fall.

The documentary was first released in April 2018 and has since premiered at some of the biggest film festivals in the country, while also receiving screen time at select cinema locations in Mzansi.

And now, viewers will be able to watch Thuli’s story on demand after the film was uploaded to Showmax to celebrate South African Women’s Month
The 86-minute film was described as “…a timely portrait of a public servant who uses her office for good at a pivotal moment in South African politics” after it won the Special Jury prize at the Hot Docs International Documentary Film Festival in Canada last year.
Large portions of the film echo Thuli’s key belief, “Corruption erodes everything that is good” and the hour-and-a-half-long screen journey gives us a never-before-seen look into the final months which saw her compiling the State Capture Report which implicated the infamous Gupta family.

As well as that, we see Thuli the woman as she interacts with her family (she’s a single mother of two) and goes about her daily rituals.

In short, Whispering Truth to Power is a window into Thuli’s calm demeanour despite the chaos that surrounds her.
