It was draw number 11 for the two heavyweights of South African football. Sundowns and Orlando Pirates played out to a goalless draw in a match which started 15 minutes late due to fans who were still outside the stadium.
Pitso Mosimane’s charges met Milutin “Micho” Sredojevic’s boys in an epic clash at Soweto’s Orlando Stadium on Monday night. Before the game, both teams had played 24 league games with Downs topping the table with 44 points while Pirates occupied the second place with 41 points.
The two teams were fighting for a top spot in the Absa Premiership table. The game started on fire with Sundowns’ Thapelo Morena narrowly missing a chance that could have put his team one up in the first minute.
His captain Hlompho Kekana followed with a long-range shot that was fisted by Downs keeper Wayne Sandilands. Although both teams were attacking each other, Pirates started making inroads after 30 minutes into the game.
Their repeated efforts saw Luvuyo Memela being denied a goalscoring opportunity when he was brought down just outside the box by Lebohang Moboe.
Maboe earned himself a yellow card for the foul.
Seconds before the break, Pirates forward Thembinkosi Lorch unleashed a powerful long-range shot that was blocked by Denis Onyango.
The fireworks continued in the second half and both teams kept threatening to score. In the 66th minutes, Siyabonga Mpontshane replaced injured Sandilands.
Both teams boosted their attack with second-half substitutions but the game ended on a goalless draw as both teams failed to convert their numerous chances.
Downs remains top of the table with 45 points while Pirates still sits a number two with 42 points.
