SABC’s Song Of The Year fight is settled

SABC‘s Song Of The Year fight is settled! The SABC’s ‘Song Of The Year’ drama has been resolved! The company has reported that they can now reveal the Top 10 on all radio stations.

Scores of people were left disappointed on the 31st of December when it was announced that the Song Of The Year would not be taking place on Ukhozi FM. The highly anticipated annual Top 10 chart show usually ushers Mzansi into the new year. The intense competition allows people to vote for their favourite song numerous times, and the one with the most votes wins. But this year it did not air…

Owen Ndlovu of Michael Owen Productions accused the SABC of stealing his company’s SOTY concept. After the agreement between the two companies got terminated, he alleged that the broadcaster continued using their voting system without compensating them.

It is also understood that MO Productions was responsible for running the New Year’s Eve Song of the Year chart for Ukhozi FM in particular.

On Tuesday, the SABC attorneys received a notice of withdrawal of the case by MO Productions. The reasons for this decision have not been relayed as yet.

It is alleged that the Song Of The Year program makes about R100 million every year, but Owen’s company last received the money in 2016.

SABC’s acting spokesperson Mmoni Seapolelo said that Michael Owen Productions would be responsible for handling the legal costs the SABC used in defending themselves in court.

The large outcry, especially from Ukhozi FM’s listeners, saw people demanding to be compensated for the money they used to vote. Not to mention the broken relationship between the station and its listeners.
