Somizi and Mohale’s wedding planner Maureen Skosana reveals all the big-day secrets

When it came to executing their dream wedding love-birds, Somizi Mhlongo and Mohale Motaung spared no expense and hired one of the country’s top event coordinators to make their special day a memorable one. Channel24 spoke to events coordinator to the stars Maureen “Nono” Skosana, about what went into pulling off the most extravagant and opulent wedding of 2019. Maureen, who goes by the nickname Nono, studied law and practised for 15 years until her passion and love of parties and extravagance grew beyond simply a hobby. What started as a part-time business, soon escalated to a full-time operation in 2012, when she could no longer juggle a law career and flourishing events coordinating business.

The Idols SA judge and his fiance, Mohale, married less than a year after getting engaged in Paris in May 2018, approaching Nono three months before the big celebration.

It took Nono and a massive team four weeks to bring the couple’s vision of love to life. The couple said their “I do’s” during a lavish African traditional wedding ceremony on Saturday. The lavish reception was held at Kibler Park and attended by a host of celebrities including Cassper Nyovest, Pearl Thusi, Kelly Khumalo, Khanyi Mbau, and Bonang Matheba.

About working with the pair, Nono said: “It was such a pleasure working with them both. My team and I had so much fun working on this wedding. Somizi and Mohale have patient attitudes, are humble, and can be witty at times.” The couple described their dream wedding to Nono as “modern traditional with a touch of elegance.”

And that is precisely what Nono and her team produced. “They knew what they wanted, which made it easier for us. Our job was to make sure that the decor reflected their style and what they envisioned,” she said.
To reflect the newlyweds’ personalities throughout the venue, Nono says they added “lots of chandeliers and a few fresh flowers on the roof.”

An African dance performance accompanied the groom arrival, and Judith Sephuma did the opening prayer.

Entertainers on the bill included Vusi Nova, Prince KB, Lerato Kganyago, Naked DJ, and DJ Dineo Ranaka. It took a massive team to pull off a celebration of this scale, including branding logistics, catering, bar services, security as well as a set-up and strike team.

Other celebrities Nono and her team have worked with include Tshepi Vundla, Masechaba Ndlovu, the Ranakas, Gugu Khathi and the Fergusons. When asked if she has ever received any outrageous or bizarre request, she says: “We’ve never received any,” quickly adding, “Well, not yet!
