Springbok captain Siya Kolisi had millions of South Africans beaming with pride after he led the team to victory during their Rugby World Cup semi-final clash against Wales
But there was one person whose excitement eclipsed them all – his father Fezakele Raymond Kolisi.
Fezakele is on his way to Japan to watch his son in action during South Africa’s final against England. Siya’s wife, Rachel Kolisi, revealed on Instagram that it would be his first trip abroad. My dads are on their way. Utata’s first overseas trip – what a time to be alive,” she captioned a picture of her father and Fezakele.
Siya’s dad is one of his biggest supporters. He proudly watched his son’s debut as Springbok captain in June 2018. Fezakele had to watch the match from his home in Port Elizabeth after missing his flight to Johannesburg. He put on his Springbok jersey and cheered his son on from his couch. Siya inherited his love for rugby from his father. Fezakele was a centre for the Home Defenders rugby club (now Zwide United).
Siya has spoken out in the past about how he grew up in poverty. His late grandmother, who helped raise him because his teenager parents were unable to, washed dishes to help put food on the table.
Siya was a teenager when South Africa last won the Rugby World Cup in 2007
He watched the final at a local tavern because he did not have a TV at his house. Fast-forward to 2019, and Siya’s dad will get to watch him play in a final live from the stands of Japan’s International Stadium Yokohama. The only thing left now is for Siya and the rest of the Springboks to lift the cup on November 2. Bring it home, Bokke!
