When it comes to acting roles, he picks and chooses, after leaving The Queen, he kept his head so low far from the public radar, now Sello Maake KaNcube is set to star in a Kwaito icon Lebo’s biopic.
Not only that, the veteran actor will feature in two different roles, he will anchor new Mzansi Wethu show Abobaba, a reality show whose thrust is to help parents reconnect with their children after separation or divorce. It seeks to drive the importance of mediation in overcoming tense relations after family disconnections.
Airing every Saturday night at 19:30. Abobaba was created by production company Passion Lane, and it relates so well with
many South Africans, who lost contact with their kids after the children were born.
There are many families across South Africa who seek to connect or reconnect with their fathers, and Abobaba would come in handy in such scenarios. Sello will also star alongside KB Motsilanyane, Bahumi Madisakwane, Khabonina Qubeka, and Peter Saphuma in the upcoming BET Africa series Dream, which looks into the life of renowned musician Lebo Mathosa. It will start airing on 6 November 2019.
Playing the predator
Sello has played a host of unscrupulous characters in most cases during his acting career spanning around 30 years and in Lebo
he will play a Daveyton pastor who has predatory inclinations.
“Usually when one portrays a character who is real, it becomes a challenge because he was a real human being and not a character. But it was not difficult to tap the mind of a pervert and show actions in his ways without overacting,” he said.
The pastor’s influence on Lebo’s family will be displayed after the pastor recruits Lebo’s biological mother.
“This man impregnated young girls who trust him. He used to go around the country collecting children from destitute families and try to help them,” Sello revealed.
Voice of experience
Sello is not new in paying tribute to Lebo, in 2012 he did a musical production at the State Theatre, Pretoria, in honour of Lebo featuring Khanyi Mbau. So this one will be easy for him.
“During production, I learnt a lot about the other side of Lebo’s life. I met her biological mother Judy Peter and she explained how she had been recruited by the pastor. She also explained the conflict between Lebo’s adopted mother Nomvula
Mathosa, that came after Lebo had passed on,” he said.
Be that as it may, reports are that after Lebo died in a fatal car crash in 2006, Judy and Nomvula became sworn enemies
because of his R1million estate, as they both wanted a piece of the cake. It was easy for Sello, to play the character because he had researched well.
“I heard Judy’s story and it will help me in the portrayal of the dubious pastor. Many young actors always talk about the art of
getting into a character. There is no such thing, a character is defined by actions,” said Sello.
