The pressure of being in the spotlight, busy schedules and egos often lead to A-list couples butting heads.
Stars like Connie and Shona Ferguson, who have been married for 17 years, make it look easy, but celebrity romances aren’t also as picture perfect as they seem.
Here’s a look at some of the most shocking break-ups of the year
ProVerb and Liesl
Idols SA presenter ProVerb and his beauty queen girlfriend Liesl Laurie were one of South Africa’s most loved celebrity couples. They posted cute pictures of each other on Instagram and travelled the world together. Their perfect romance came to a crashing end in October.
Thando and Frans
Thando Thabethe and Frans Mashao were set to walk down the aisle after getting engaged in July 2017. However, by June 2018, Thando had stopped wearing her ring. Rumours were rife that Frans cheated but Thando has remained mum on their break-up.
“I don’t think I need to go into the nitty-gritties… I never denied that we are not engaged anymore. I don’t think I need to tell people the reasons behind why it ended,” she told Azania on Real Talk. Guess we will never know what ended this once happy relationship.
Ayanda and Mthoko
Ayanda Thabethe and Mthoko ‘Dash’ Mkhathini allegedly called it quits weeks after a trip to Greece in September. The Sunday Sun reported last week that Ayanda was the one who walked away from the relationship. The both deleted most of their pictures they took together in 2018. But a source told the publication the couple could just be on a break to figure things out.
“Maybe, they just need time apart to think about what they really want. Remember, Ayanda is an independent woman and knows what she wants. She has dated stars before, so she knows how these things usually end up,” the mole said.
Nonhle and Andile
Nonhle and Andile Jali relationship took a dramatic and violent turn in late October when police were called to their home in Pretoria.
Andile allegedly choked his wife and slashed her car tyres when she tried to leave the house after an argument. The Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder was arrested and spent the night the bail. He opened a case of domestic violence against Nonhle, claiming that she had assaulted him during the altercation.
They haven’t officially filed for divorce, but things are not looking good.
HHP and Lerato
The late HHP shocked his fans in April when he took to Instagram to announce that he had broken up with Lerato Sengadi. “Me and my beautiful Motho whom I love so much will NOT be continuing with our marriage. I was caught cheating,” he wrote.
Six months later the rapper was found dead in his Randburg home after a suspected suicide. It’s unclear what happened between his break-up post and his death, but Lerato was heartbroken about his passing. Jabba’s family reportedly refused to give Lerato access to the home, saying “she moved out” months ago.
The family further denied that she was the rapper’s wife, saying that the lobola negotiations had not been completed. Lerato took them to court with a judge recognising her as HHP’s customary wife. All in all it was a sad end to their fairy-tale romance.
