The South Africa Human Rights Commission has asked Chinese authorities to investigate allegations of ill-treatment of Africans in the country.
Videos showing ill-treatment have gone viral on social media. The African residents told AFP they have suffered forced evictions, arbitrary quarantines and mass coronavirus tests and face discrimination in restaurants and hotels.
SAHRC CEO Tseliso Thipanyane said the commission would be raising concerns with the Chinese government and asking other governments to put pressure on the country to ensure the ethical treatment of Africans in the country.
Thipanyane said whatever the provocation prompting the ill-treatment, the state must make sure people comply with international standards.
