The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) has applauded its members deployed in Mpumalanga near the Mozambican border. They intercepted and recovered six top-of-the-range vehicles before being smuggled into Mozambique between Saturday, 11 December and Thursday, 16 December.

SANDF head of communications Siphiwe Dlamini said the gallant soldiers were conducting routine patrols along the South Africa/Mozambique border when they noticed cars being driven between the borders.

When they stopped the vehicles, the occupants left them behind and ran into the bushes.

“The six recovered vehicles – Toyota Hilux double-cab bakkies and Toyota Fortuner – were handed over to the police for further investigation,” he said.

He added that Defence and Military Veterans Minister Thandi Modise and deputy Thabang Makwetla, as well as Defence secretary Sonto Kudjoe, SANDF chief, General Rudzani Maphwanya and members of the military command congratulated the soldiers for carrying out their duties diligently.

“It is encouraging to see members of the SANDF serving South Africa and its people during the festive season and beyond,” he said.

Meanwhile, four suspects, aged between 27 and 31, appeared before the Nkomazi Magistrates Court in Mpumalanga on Friday, 17 December, on charges of robbery, possession of a stolen car and suspected stolen property.

According to the police, the suspects on Wednesday, 15 December, approached a man on his way home from work and pointed him with a knife. Then they dragged him to a bush nearby.

Brigadier Selvy Mohlala said the suspects robbed him of his cellphones and clothes.

“The suspects left the man naked in the bush and drove off in a Colt bakkie. He found his way to Tonga Police Station, reported the matter and a case of robbery was opened,” said Mohlala.

The suspects were remanded in custody and will appear on 22 December.
