Portsmouth 4 – 2 Barnsley #FACup

League One Portsmouth reached the FA Cup fifth round for the first time in 10 years with a comfortable win over Championship strugglers Barnsley.

Ben Close’s low drive from the edge of the box gave the hosts the lead before John Marquis poked in Ronan Curtis’ already goalbound header just before half-time.

Cauley Woodrow’s stunning, swerving 25-yard strike pulled one back for Barnsley after the break with their first shot on target, and Jacob Brown should have levelled when hitting wide from point-blank range,

Moments later Pompey re-established their two-goal advantage as keeper Alex Bass’ long clearance went all the way through to Curtis, who prodded home before Christian Burgess’ header made it four.

Conor Chaplin tapped in a late second goal for Barnsley, who have now lost their last three games and will turn their attention to trying to survive in the Championship, where they sit five points adrift of safety.

Portsmouth, FA Cup winners in 2008, has now recorded six straight wins in all competitions as they combine their FA Cup run with a promotion push in League One, where they sit a point outside of the play-offs, and an upcoming EFL Trophy semi-final.
