SA COVID-19: Western Cape graveyards running out of space

The high number of deaths from COVID-19 means some provinces are fast running out of burial space. In the Western Cape, taxi violence and gang violence only exacerbate the situation.

With about 500 burials a week, city officials are calling on people to consider alternative burial options.

COVID-19 means graveyards have become common meeting places.

And despite the number of funeralgoers being restricted to 50 per burial, graveyards are full.

The City of Cape Town is recording about 2000 burials a month.

Because funerals are considered super-spreader events, an appeal has been made for people to hold funerals during the week rather than weekends.

The City has expanded its burial sites since the first wave of COVID-19.

But it’s also looking at other options.

“For some time now we have been engaging with not only the undertaker community but also the religious leaders to help engage with our residents cutaway we have also requested them to consider alternative forms of burial. In some cultures and religions cremations are allowed so we have really ramped up our efforts to be able to accommodate increased numbers on those sides,” said Zahid Badroodien, from City of Cape Town.

But many are opposed to cremation. For them, the city has another option.
