Muvhango’s new actress Kertrice Maitisa promises fireworks

She had to convince viewers she can act and that the new Muvhango was worth their time! When you are a “new” face on TV, you work hard to bring your character to life and hope the viewers will love you,  or at least love to hate you. But when Kertrice Maitisa joined a recently changed Muvhango, she had a much bigger task before her.

Kertrice is one of the members of the new cast that came with the new storyline after Muvhango’s sudden plot twist in honour of their 3000 episodes. Loyal Muvhango fans weren’t exactly warming up to the changes and that included the actors who were introduced.

Kertrice’s character, Thobile Zikalakala, is a rude and spoilt young woman who has no notion of being denied anything in life. The actor had to deal with the pressure that came with joining the drama as part of the new story.

“It was just exciting for us, we wanted to get in there and get the work done. Everyone was excited for the new challenge that lay ahead of us. But it was also nerve-racking because people don’t really easily accept change,” she told TshisaLIVE.

As predicted, Kertrice says she had negative feedback, just based on the fact that she was a new face.

“A lot of the initial reaction was negative, but that happens. We knew that everyone would have different reactions. The audience that we have was not going to immediately grasp what was happening, so we all just gave it our best because that is all we could do. We would win some and lose some.”

Kertrice Maitisa The 24-year-old said she braced herself because she knew it wouldn’t be easy to win Mzansi over.

“I had to remember that in Mzansi, change is one of the hardest things for us to process. I think I just decided that I would work really hard and  join the cast and crew of Muvhango who really believed in the new story that I would be a part of telling.”

Contrary to what many people who met her on Muvhango think, Kertrice is actually a child star, having begun working in productions in primary school.

The actor has played Nthabiseng in the SABC2 sitcom Mamello and also featured in productions such as Mzansi Magic’s Chandies and Montana. “I love what I do and all I want to do is excel at it. It’s about to get exciting for viewers as Thobile’s story unfolds. They will get to understand why she’s so damn rude and why she does the things she does.”

People that watch soapies daily, will tell you just how attached they become to the characters they watch. Kertrice says even though it has taken a while, she’s convinced that viewers of Muvhango have warmed up to the new storyline and, in turn, gave them a fair chance to prove their capabilities as actors.
