An elderly woman and her daughter survived four days stuck in a lift by drinking each other’s urine.
The 82-year-old grandmother and her 64-year-old daughter were making their way upstairs to take a shower in their four-storey home when the lift got stuck.
They were the only two at home and neither had their cell phone on them, Lad Bible reports.
Without any food or water the pair were forced to gather the liquid waste, by cupping their hands while the other was urinating, then drink it to stay hydrated.
According to Dr Yin, who treated them, the unnamed mother and daughter wouldn’t have survived without drinking the urine.
“We know that urine contains mostly water,” Yin explains. “Although it has some toxins, it can still be used to sustain life temporarily.”
The pair, from China’s north-western province Shaanxi, resorted to desperate measures to stay alive, Daily Mail writes.
“The mother stood on her daughter’s shoulders and used her fist to break the light above their heads,” Yin adds.
“She then pulled out the iron wire inside the light bulb and used it to open a small gap between the lift doors.”
They would then take turns to breathe fresh air from the gap.
On the fourth day, the daughter managed to climb out of the lift through a wider gap after they prised the lift doors.
She called for help and firefighters came to the rescue.
Both were exhausted and severely dehydrated by the time they were brought into Gaoxin Hospital in the city of Xi’an.
Fortunately, the pair made full recoveries.
The desperate measures they took during desperate times, paid off.
“Fluids are vitally important,” Yin says.
“Without them, these two people couldn’t have survived for so long.”
