Mogau Motlhatswi talks about her character Mapitsi on Skeem Saam

ACTING is an escape for Mogau Motlhatswi (27) from Mogoto Village in Zebediela, Limpopo. It allows me to put my issues aside and step into the next person’s shoes. This helps me to be true to the character. This is why I don’t judge my character Mapitsi in Skeem Saam, who became pregnant when she was 15,” said Mogau. Mapitsi is a young student from Ga-Mashashane who lives in Turfloop and became a mother as a teenager.

“She is the girlfriend of Tbos Maputla, played by Cornet Mamabolo. They had a complicated love relationship until they separated when Tbos went to university.” Mapitsi doesn’t let situations stand in her way. I learnt how to embrace femininity through her,” said Mogau, who has played the role for eight years. Mogau enrolled for audiovisual communication at the University of Joburg, but after three months, auditioned for the role of Rachel and got the role of Mapitsi instead.

“I was 19 and I love how the character progressed from a teenager to an independent woman. Mogau said her favourite part of the storyline was when Wallet lost a treasure coin Mapitsi found. It tested the friendship between us and questioned Mapitsi’s morals.

“My character was pushed to another level and it challenged me to be a better actress.” Mogau has also found therapy in acting. “When my grandfather died this year, it allowed me to put my feelings on hold while on set as Mapitsi. He taught me values and heritage by passing on the family traditions. She also runs the Sesi Lethabo project that rewards kids for positive behaviour. “The rewards encourage kids to do well, be disciplined and kind and behave as you want them to. Well-mannered kids bring joy to me,” said Mogau.
