Miss SA Zozibini Tunzi reveals her national costume

Miss South Africa, Zozibini Tunzi, has unveiled the dress she will be wearing to the Miss Universe pageant next month. Her ‘Wave of Love’ national costumed was designed by The Costume Department’s Lloyd Kandlin. The colours of the costume were inspired by the South African flag, and that’s not the only special thing about the look. The outfit has love letters, written by men to South African women, incorporated into the design.  A few weeks ago, Zozibini Tunzi launched her #HeForShe campaign, calling on men to stand with women in the fight against gender-based violence.

Men pledged their support by sending in their love letters to South African women. Here she is! Waves of love! I’m proud to wear a wave of South African love with me on the Miss Universe Stage. Thank you to everyone who partook in my #HeforShe campaign and still continue to do so!” Zozibini wrote on Instagram. Her evening gown for the Miss Universe pageant was also unveiled at the event. Local designer Biji created the hand-beaded dress which was inspired by South African minerals.

Zozibini will be taking a special gift with her when she travels to Atlanta for the pageant, as Miss Universe contestants have been encouraged to take a soft toy with them, which will be donated to various charities. Zozibini’s soft toy is a doll designed by former Miss South Africa, Bokang Montjane, who created the African doll collection to help young girls feel confident in their skin.
