Mass graves for COVID-19 deaths in Western Cape

About 9,000 people will die from COVID-19 in the Western Cape. That is the projection by the provincial government as the province prepares for the peak of the pandemic.

The City of Cape Town says it has made available five mass burial sites to address concerns over a lack of space.

The City says at least 1,200 people are buried in the city every month. Furthermore, 360 cremations are done during this time.

While those numbers are expected to increase rapidly amidst the COVID19 pandemic – the city hopes more families can cremate their loved ones.

The Muslim Judicial Council says cremations are not an option in Islam. The city’s lack of burial sites is not the only concern leading up to the peak.

Undertakers are also worried about dealing with clients under the new norm.  Coronavirus Hotline Number: 0800 029 999 from 8 am to 4pm, Monday to Friday.
