His appointment as head coach of Bloemfontein Celtic came as somewhat of a shock, but John Maduka is up to the task of leading Siwelele. The Malawian opened up on what can be expected of him at Siwelele.

Maduka’s role as co-coach alongside Lehlohonolo Seema, yielded impressive results for the Mangaung outfit.Together they led Siwelele to a top eight position as well as a Nedbank Cup semi-final berth.

However, in seek of greener pastures, Seema resigned as Celtic co-coach to take up the reins at Chippa United. Now thrust into the spotlight, Maduka is unfazed by the task ahead, seeking to establish continuity at Celtic.

He opened up to Soccer Laduma about his appointment that he is grabbing with both hands.

“Well, we didn’t know that my co-coach would be leaving. Things just happened and my co-coach had to leave, and these things happen in this industry of ours. It does not mean I will be here forever. One day someone will also come. Like I was once a captain at this club and today, years later, there’s someone else who is the captain of the team. Before me, there was another captain. When you are in coaching, it’s either they are going to bring in someone who will maybe be a co-coach with you, or you will take over. In this instance, it happened that they made me the head coach and brought in someone who can help out.

“Here I am and I am looking forward to the challenging job. It’s not easy, but we will keep on working hard. It’s an opportunity I have been given and I am so humbled and I am taking it with both hands,” Maduka said.

His first task as head coach will be to guide Siwelele to the Nedbank final against Baroka FC on Saturday 8 August at Orlando Stadium.
