Substitute Roberto Firmino scored a dramatic stoppage-time winner as Liverpool beat Paris St-Germain in a five-goal Champions League thriller at Anfield.
PSG pulled a goal back before half-time through Thomas Meunier’s volley before Mo Salah thought he had made it 3-1 from close range but, after a delay, his goal was ruled out for Sturridge’s foul on keeper Alphonse Areola.
World Cup winner Kylian Mbappe thought he had earned the visitors a point with a composed finish late on before Firmino, who suffered an eye injury against Tottenham on Saturday, drilled in a 91st-minute winner.
It’s a fully deserved victory for Liverpool, even they needed a stoppage-time goal by Firmino to atone for the late sloppiness that allowed PSG to equalise. The visitors never matched Liverpool’s intensity, instead relying on ad hoc individual brilliance to get them off the hook.
A super-talented disgrace, they nearly got away with it, but Firmino served justice with a sweet late strike. Liverpool’s biggest names were slightly below par but there were big performances from the likes of Milner, Wijnaldum, Robertson and Alexander-Arnold, and Sturridge made an encouraging return to the starting lineup. But Firmino came off the bench to hit the glory goal. Last year’s runners-up are up and running again.
