The Hawks have taken over the investigation into the development of Komani’s so-called ‘stadium’.
Eastern Cape Hawks spokesperson, Yolisa Mgolodela, said, “on 7 October, a case was opened in Queenstown Police Station regarding the money that is alleged to have been fraudulently spent.”
“The project was to construct a R22-million sporting field but when the unveiling took place on Monday (4 October), all the people who were there alleged that the stadium is not value for money,” said Mgolodela.
Mgolodela said the investigation is still in its initial stages.
The EFF opened a case of corruption in Komani, against the leadership of the Enoch Mgijima Local Municipality.
The party claims that there are glaring signs of money laundering and corruption in the project.
The rather flimsy-looking Lesseyton Sports Field cost R15m but was tendered for R22m.
According to local contractors, they were allegedly overlooked when the stadium was built.
