Leon Schuster’s movies taken down

South African streaming service Showmax has followed in the global trend of removing and reviewing content that may be considered racially insensitive. The move has seen popular South African filmmaker Leon Schuster‘s movies taken down from the streaming platform.

According to a report by Netwerk24 six of the comedian’s film, such as Mama Jack, which Schuster used blackface in, and Mr. Bones, have been removed and are being reviewed.

Black Lives Matter is currently once again a very hot topic across the world as the conversations about the treatment of black people are being brought to light and addressed.

Head of communication for Showmax, Richard Boorman confirmed to Netwerk24 that several films have been removed from the streaming service as they review content that could be racially insensitive.

The famous filmmaker speaking to Netwerk24 said that he was “shocked” and “can’t believe that the content of his films does any harm”. Schuster in a previous interview had said that he would not go blackface again as it’s just racist.

On Twitter, the 69-year-old has been trending with many weighing over whether his films should be considered racist or pure entertainment.
