KZN mother remains in custody after daughter’s murder charge

The mother of a KwaZulu-Natal Grade 1 pupil will remain behind bars until her next court appearance. Fungai Nyamadzawo initially told police 6-year-old Alexia had been kidnapped. Nyamadzawo appeared in the Umhlali magistrate’s court on charges of kidnapping, defeating the ends of justice and murder.

Residents on KwaZulu-Natal’s North Coast rallied around the Nyamadzawo family as news of six-year-old Alexia’s kidnapping spread.

Her mother told police she’d been snatched out of their car on Sunday. We suspected that the child had been kidnapped. But on Monday morning it became apparent that there was a lot of cracks in the stories. That is when the mother was taken into custody for further questioning by detectives,” said KZN police spokesperson, Jay Naicker.

On Tuesday, after intense efforts by search and rescue teams, Alexia’s body was found deep inside this sugarcane plantation. The State intends to prove that Alexia’s killing was premeditated. Nyamadzawo is due back in court next Wednesday.
