Khayelitsha woman battles to be officially declared alive

For seven years, a Khayelitsha woman‘s struggled to have herself declared alive. 65-year-old Nothini Komna’s identity was stolen and in 2009, she was certified dead.

“I discovered that I no longer appear on the home affairs system and that I was recorded as deceased, I found out this when I went to open an account at a shop, they asked me if the id I had produced was mine, I said yes. They then told me that, the owner of this id has passed away,” she said.

After struggling for years to set the record straight, Home Affairs will issue now issued her with a new ID. Home Affairs says identity theft is growing.
