Kelly Khumalo angers EFF supporters: ‘the party is all about war’

Pop star Kelly Khumalo has angered EFF supporters after a television interview in which she discussed an incident where she left the stage at a KwaZulu-Natal EFF rally after only two songs amid chants of “Senzo” from the crowd.

The pop star was called an ‘ungrateful bastard’ and accused of ‘spreading lies’ about the party. On SABC3’s Trending SA, Khumalo was asked about what happened.

She told the show’s presenters, Musa Mthombeni and Kuli Roberts, that she had no regrets about cutting her performance short.

“You can say whatever you want to say to me but there’s that energy that says we’re all about war, and you feel it with those people, I felt that and I was like ‘this is not my place’, I kept saying to my DJ ‘this is not my place’,” she said.

Asked how she felt after walking out, she said “very powerful”.

“I stand for the light, I stand for kindness, I stand for love,” she continued.

Her comments did not go down well among EFF supporters on social media, with Xabiso Mtwana tweeting: “We invited [Kelly Khumalo] to perform at one of our rallies in KZN and this is how she thank us. She go around spreading lies about the [EFF]. I want to warn her, she must not start something she won’t finish. Ungrateful bastard.”

His tweet has been widely shared, with over 300 “retweets” and over 500 “favourites” at the time of publication.

It also garnered a response from ANC head of elections Fikile Mbalula, which in turn elicited a response from EFF leader Julius Malema.

The Citizen reported in March that Khumalo took to the stage at an EFF rally in Chatsworth, KwaZulu-Natal, but was forced to end her performance amid chants of “Senzo” from the crowd, one member of which held up a banner demanding “Justice for Senzo Meyiwa”.

The Jehovah hitmaker was late Orlando Pirates and Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Senzo Meyiwa’s girlfriend when he died at her home in Vosloorus in 2014.

Khumalo has said she did everything she possibly could to save the life of her late boyfriend, and that she and her family were victims of a robbery that night, with her sister corroborating her story and saying her family cooperated with the police.

Despite this, Khumalo has been on the wrong side of Meyiwa’s fans and family. She has been accused of withholding information that could lead to the apprehension of Meyiwa’s killers because she was at the scene of the incident. She has been cyberbullied as a result, and now confronted in person at the EFF rally.
