Kaizer Chiefs 0 - 2 Orlando Pirates (0-5 agg)

Orlando Pirates are on course to end the trophy drought after advancing to the MTN8 final with a 5-0 aggregate win over Soweto rivals Kaizer Chiefs.

Josef Zinnbauer was back in charge of the side following his return to Germany. After his influential display in last weekend’s derby, Thembinkosi Lorch missed out for Pirates while Reeve Frosler returned for the hosts.

The Amakhosi were dominating possession in the encounter but the Sea Robbers were looking dangerous on the break and in the 18th minute, Leonardo Castro’s flick-on was straight at Bucs goalkeeper Richard Ofori.

Gavin Hunt’s side suffered a blow in the 21st minute when Reeve Frosler did what looked to be some serious damage to his knee and was replaced by Siphelele Ntshangase, who came into midfield while Njabulo Blom dropped back into the right-back position.

Fortune Makaringe had a difficult opportunity from an acute angle after he was played in by Zakhele Lepasa in the 33rd minute but failed to find the target as his effort flashed dangerously across goal.

Chiefs were once again looking the more enterprising of the two sides after the break and a swift-flowing move culminated in Yagan Sasman pinging a ball into the area which caused chaos in the Pirates defence before eventually being cleared, while Chiefs hit the woodwork through Ntshangase’s snapshot.

Against the run of play, the Bucs went up the other end and took the lead when Hotto was released clear through clear on goal and fired a low shot towards the bottom left-hand corner which Akpeyi spilt into the path of Makaringe, who had a simple tap-in to an empty net.

Soon after, Ofori made a good save to deny Akumu’s header from point-blank range despite knowing very little about it.

Hunt then threw on Kambole for Manyama with a last throw of the dice, but it did little to change the momentum of the game as Pirates doubled their lead in the 80th minute through Linda Mntambo, after he was released through on goal by the brilliant Hotto before firing the ball past Akpeyi, who had come off his line, into the bottom left-hand corner.

Kambole had a chance to pull a goal back with five minutes to go but blazed his effort over the bar after being played in by Ntshangase, who had impressed since coming on.

Salt was rubbed into the wounds when Mathoho was sent off for picking up a second yellow card for holding back Lepasa deep in stoppage time as Pirates advanced to final, where they will face Bloemfontein Celtic.
