Interesting things to know about Molefi Monaisa who plays Wallet on Skeem Saam

Molefi Monaisa plays the role of Wallet, a former actor who has travelled the world and often boasts about his adventures in New York on SABC1 soapie Skeem Saam. His character keeps the fans glued to their screens week in and week out.

PLAYING WALLET

“I love playing Wallet because of his carefree nature. He lives in his own world,” says the 44-year-old actor. “He’s a fun, intelligent and very well-spoken fellow who sometimes likes to put his nose where it does not belong.” He tells Move! that Molefi and Wallet have something in common; they are both passionate about theatre. “I’ve been in so many plays, including The Rivonia Trial. I took a little break from theatre and got the Skeem Saam role because I wanted to try something different,” he says.

He explains that one of his friends, Africa Tsoai, who plays John Maputla in Skeem Saam, told him about the role on the show. “Africa told me that Skeem Saam was looking for someone to play the role of Wallet. I went to auditions and a month later, they called me and told me that I got the part,” says Molefi. He speaks with such a perfect British accent on the show, one would think he spent a few years in Britain. “For those who are curious, I didn’t grow up in the UK. I just learnt the accent on my own. Skeem Saam wanted a person with the accent, I did my part and they loved it.

HIS CHILDHOOD

Molefi says he grew up in Potchefstroom in North West with his two older sisters and a younger brother. “When I was growing up, I wanted to be a lawyer or doctor but my parents couldn’t afford to send me to university,” says Molefi. After high school, he went for dramatic arts training at the Method Actors Centre in Pretoria. That’s when he started his journey in the entertainment industry and ended up performing in different plays. Molefi, who doesn’t have a wife or children, says he is more focused on his work.

ABOUT HIS FUTURE PLANS

Molefi says he loves what he’s doing and he’s not planning to leave Skeem Saam anytime soon. However, his love for theatre will always be there and he’ll continue doing theatre productions. “Theatre will always be my favourite. I’ll soon be in a play called Madam President,” he adds.
