Imran Tahir, the only South African taking part in the Caribbean Premier League

Veteran leg-spinner Imran Tahir is set to be the only South African taking part in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) which gets underway in August.

TAHIR RETURNS TO THE GUYANA AMAZON WARRIORS
Rassie van der Dussen, Tabraiz Shamsi, Anrich Nortje, Rilee Rossouw, and Colin Ingram all had CPL contracts in place, but they were unable to confirm their travel arrangements by the tournament’s cut-off.

Tahir is able to travel to the Caribbean as he has not been in South Africa during the national lockdown. The 41-year-old was abroad playing in the Pakistan Super League when the lockdown came into effect.

“He belongs to Lahore so he remained here until the travel restrictions were lifted,” a source close to the cricketer said.

The spinner has now travelled to the Caribbean ahead of the tournament which starts on 18 August and will be held in Trinidad and Tobago.

Players who want to take part in the CPL must arrive in the Caribbean by 1 August and endure a 14-day quarantine period.

Cricket South Africa is understood to have issued No Objectiion Certificates (NOC) to players who have Indian Premier League contracts in place.

South Africa are also set to tour the Caribbean later this year, although the scheduling of the IPL could pose a significant obstacle with 14-day quarantine periods becoming the norm in the world of cricket.

Ten South African players have contracts to play in the 2020 IPL which is set to get underway on 19 September in the United Arab Emirates.
