Football matches still prohibited in SA under alert level 3

Professional football matches are still prohibited under lockdown level 3 regulations in South Africa. The Sports, Arts and Culture Department said contact sports are only allowed to resume training but are not open for resumption at alert level 3.

Sports, Arts and Culture Minister Mthethwa said his department has met and has been in consultation with the South African Football Association and the Premier Soccer League. Training can resume under level 3 of the lockdown for some contact and non-contact sports.

However, it will be prohibited in COVID-19 hotspot areas. Strict hygiene and safety protocols will also have to be adhered to and spectators won’t be allowed. All sports bodies must within 14 days after the publication of these directions, inform the minister in writing as to the date of resumption and further provide an operational guideline including a guarantee in the form of affidavits related to the testing of all officials,” Mthethwa said.
