EURO 2020

EURO2020: England 1 – 0 Croatia

England up and running as they beat Croatia. Sterling superbly steered home from Kalvin Phillips’ pass to register his first goal at a major tournament for the Three Lions and settle a tight contest. It capped a purposeful England performance, with Phil Foden also hitting the post early on.

Raheem Sterling’s goal helped England begin their Euro 2020 campaign with a victory over Croatia at a sunny Wembley. The only disappointment for manager Gareth Southgate will have been the boos from a section of fans when his players took the knee prior to kick-off, though they were largely drowned out by cheers.

England have kicked off their Euro 2020 campaign in style with a 1-0 win over Croatia. Raheem Sterling struck in the 57th minute, firing home from Kalvin Phillips’ through ball to send the reduced-capacity crowd at Wembley into raptures.

It was a welcome breakthrough with tension creeping in and England almost struck again moments later. Harry Kane was poised to meet Mason Mount’s cross at the far post, only for Josko Gvardiol to clear away. Ante Rebic wasted Croatia’s best chance, skewing his shot wide from 12 yards out.

In an otherwise cagey first half, Phil Foden struck the inside of the post with just five minutes and Kieran Trippier fired a free-kick into the wall shortly before the break. The victory puts England in a strong position in Group D with games against Scotland and the Czech Republic, who meet on Monday, to come.
