5 fun & quirky facts about the royal wedding

1. THE GROOM IS MZANSI’S FAVE BRITISH ROYAL

Apparently, South Africans heart Prince Harry more than any other member of the royal family. That’s according to the results of a global Ipsos survey, which was carried out online in 28 countries in the run-up to the royal wedding.

The Queen took second place in the list of Mzansi’s top five most-popular royals, followed by Prince William, Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle.

2. 200 LEMONS WERE USED TO MAKE THE COUPLE’S WEDDING CAKE

Rather than a traditional fruit cake, the couple has opted to serve a cake that wouldn’t be out of place at any well-heeled hipster’s wedding: an elderflower-and-lemon sponge cake covered with Swiss meringue buttercream and decorated with fresh flowers.

Along with all those lemons, baker Claire Ptak used 500 organic eggs, 10 bottles of elderflower cordial, and 20kgs each of butter, sugar, and flour to create the cake for Prince Harry and Markle’s big day.

3. MAY 19 IS A BIT OF A MACABRE CHOICE FOR THEIR WEDDING DATE

The couple’s wedding day falls on the anniversary of another – not so happy – historic event in British history.

On May 19, 1536, Anne Boleyn, the second wife of Prince Harry’s ancestor, King Henry VIII, was beheaded on charges of incest, treason, and adultery.

4. YOU CAN BUY SOME BIZZARE COMMEMORATIVE KEEPSAKES

If you’re after a royal wedding souvenir that’ll be more of a talking point than a bog-standard tea towel, why not order one of these quirky finds online?

Crown Jewels Heritage Condoms is selling creatively-packaged Royal Wedding Souvenir Condoms. As you open the box, you can admire a pop-up picture of the bridal couple while you listen to a musical mashup of the British and American national anthems, before childishly giggling at the inscription “Your prince will come”.

Teresa Goodridge has created a colouring book for adults called Harry and Meghan: A Love Story which, according to Amazon, includes 30 illustrations that “capture the magic of their heart-warming love affair”

UK company Bags of Love have produced swimsuits with Prince Harry and Markle’s faces on them; the unfortunate placement of HRH’s beard on one of the designs has had the internet sniggering.

5. MARKLE WON’T BECOME PRINCESS MEGHAN

According to the Independent, when Markle marries her prince charming, she’ll adopt his title and name. This means she’ll become Her Royal Highness Princess Henry of Wales.

But while she’ll be a princess by marriage, she won’t be one in her own right and so shouldn’t be called Princess Meghan. This honour is reserved for those born into the royal family, which is why Prince William’s daughter is known as Princess Charlotte.

What about the late Princess Diana, you ask? Although this is how the world commonly referred to her, it was never her official title.

“It’s likely that Prince Harry will be given a dukedom, so Markle will become a duchess like [Kate Middleton],” predicts the Independent.
