Durban doctors treat COVID-19 patients through home-based care programme

A group of Durban doctors has started home-based care to assist COVID-19 patients in the comfort of their homes. The service is provided to patients who have medical aid. The group calls itself the COVID Home Management Team Durban.

Founder Dr Naseeba Kathrada said the group aims to assist people who are able to recover from the illness without hospitalisation, but still need medical care.

“It’s not just doctors. It’s healthcare workers like psychologists, we’ve got a blood lab onboard, we’ve got a hiring place where they can get oxygen concentrators. I have a place where we can provide supplements for these patients, delivered to their door.”

Medical-aid covered patients who can access teleconsults can have remote management of the virus from home using the service.

The doctors participating in the initiation will also receive additional training on home management of COVID patients, according to Kathrada.

The group is working with Vula Mobile to put primary healthcare workers directly in touch with on-call specialists and an ambulance team to transport patients to the hospital if needed.
