DJ Sithelo Shozi releases her first Gqom track Gcobhoza

Sithelo has recently released her first Gqom song Gcobhoza – a thumping dance song, which features Thuli and Koppies on vocals. Sithelo has signed to Kotini Records, she said she was enjoying her foray into the music scene.

From influencer to momager and most recently, DJ, 24-year-old Durbanite Sithelo Shozi is a busybody. The University of KwaZulu-Natal media and political sciences graduate said she attended a short course in radio production and DJing.

“I was in a space where I already had a foot into the industry, I saw that there was an opportunity to branch out from just being an influencer. I had always wanted to do something in the music, so I decided to enroll at an arts school where I did radio production and DJing,” she said.

Sithelo made her break as a DJ during the Durban July, where was booked at least four parties, including the Eyadini Village and Fact Durban Rocks.

“A lot of people think DJ Kotini plays, but it is impossible for someone to mix for you. Some people even say I come with a mixtape. People want to prove that you can’t do something. People want to see what I’m going to be playing, am I really DJing. I knew people would book me just to see if I can DJ,” she said.

“I am still finding my feet in the industry, I am still trying to make a name for myself and find my market,” she said. Sithelo said she played gqom, afrobeats and house during her sessions, and the influencer, known for her flashy lifestyle, said she would still pitch at events to DJ rocking her heels.

“I want to be known as someone that’s consistent. I want to perfect my craft, I don’t want to rush into things. I want be as good I can be. If i could be as good as Shimza, that would be great. “I want to perfect my craft at a level where I can look back and say G, look at this,” she said.

Sithelo said the response to the song had been good, and admitted to being nervous about the social media backlash. “I was very scared of people’s reactions, especially on Twitter, because people always have funny remarks. The song was received well, it’s a good start,” she said.
