Denzel Washington on Sustaining a 35-Year Marriage: ‘I Do What I’m Told and Keep My Mouth Shut’

Ever wonder how Denzel Washington and his wife, Pauletta, have managed to stay married for 35 years – in Hollywood, nogal?

Well, in a recent interview with People magazine, Denzel cheekily said: “I do what I’m told. I keep my mouth shut.”

So there you have it!

The 63-year-old actor is still madly in love with his 67-year-old wife and credited Pauletta for making their house a home and for doing all the “heavy lifting”.

“What pops into my head: Security, food, a beautiful home. The difference between a house and a home, it’s a big difference. You can buy a house but that doesn’t make it a home. And not to say a man can’t make a home a home but my wife has made our house a home and raised these beautiful kids [John David (33) Katia (30) and twins Olivia and Malcolm (27)] and protected them and sacrificed for them – she did the heavy lifting,” he said.

When asked how they spent their 35th anniversary, Denzel said they didn’t do anything splashy or over the top. “We just chilled, had some dinner. It was kind of quiet.”

Perhaps the key to a marriage that lasts so long is marrying up.

“I grew up in athletics, but my wife’s family had a great education. My wife was a child prodigy. I married up! Her family had a love and a closeness that I didn’t have. I came from a broken home and I said I have to have that.”

But Denzel insists marriage isn’t all hunky dory. You have to put in the necessary work.

“I just think you have to work at it. Not give up on each other. It’s a commitment. It’s not all the honeymoon. It doesn’t last forever so you work at it. And hopefully you’re good friends first, that might help!”
