Western Cape Health authorities say the risk of South Africa experiencing a second wave of COVID-19 is high.
Several countries are already experiencing a second wave. The province is readying itself for this eventuality and South Africans are being urged to be vigilant.
Western Cape Head of Health Keith Cloete says the province is being cautious.
“We are erring on the side of caution. And, therefore our position at the moment is based on international experiences.
The risk of having a second wave is significant. It is high and we are preparing as if we will get a second wave,” he said.
Cloete says there is a strategy in place.
“To make sure that any sign of small outbreaks needs to be recognized early, contained early so that we can contain it as it happens while being extremely vigilant that we guard against any escalation into size if a second wave”.
He says it is still unclear when the second wave will hit.
