Commission vows to prosecute if data prices not cut

The Competition Commission is adamant it will go ahead with prosecutions if Vodacom and MTN do not slash data prices. The Commission has given Vodacom and MTN two months to cut prices by up to 50 percent.

Comissioner Tembinkosi Bonakele says there must be earnest discussions with operators on the issues of data costs in South Africa.

“This is based on evidence. this is not something that we have thumb-sucked. We really do believe that there is room for a 30 to 50 percent reduction to theses prices.” The cellphone giants are blaming Government for the high prices.
