Kaizer Chiefs are set to begin the new season at least one player short after losing one of their senior squad members, but will be hoping the transfer ban imposed by Fifa is overturned in time for them to bring on new signings.
Amakhosi were punished by soccer’s governing body, following an apparent unlawful approaching in bringing midfielder Andriamirado Andrianarimanana over to Naturena in 2018. They have also lost the services of George Maluleka, who has signed a pre-contract with rivals, Mamelodi Sundowns.
However, having brought their way back to the top of domestic competition through thinking out of the box when it comes to transfer activity, Chiefs will be looking to bring on some reinforcements when the upcoming season kicks off.
We look at the players linked with South Africa’s most successful clubs ahead of the 2020/21 season.
KNOWLEDGE MUSONA – ANDERLECHT (BELGIUM)
The Zimbabwean marksman has had two highly-successful spells at Kaizer Chiefs and could be down for one more, amid an unhappy spell in Belgium.
Musona has struggled for game time at his new club, and has been a subject of reported interest from Sundowns, who too are looking to reinforce their strike force.
THABANG MONARE – BIDVEST WITS
If not for the transfer ban, this would have been the perfect chance for the Glamour Boys to swoop in for reported target Thabang Monare, who is facing an uncertain future at soon-to-be-defunct Bidvest Wits.
With Maluleka’s exit certain, the midfielder is a more than competent replacement, with just as much experience as the former Ajax Cape Town man.
THABO RAKHALE – CHIPPA UNITED
Having a player represent both South Africa’s biggest outfits in Chiefs and Orlando Pirates is not a rare occurrence, and Thabo Rakhale could follow the likes of Phumlani Mkhize and Jimmy Tau in making a similar move.
The former Buccaneers winger is currently in the books of Chippa United, but is soon to be a free agent after not agreeing to a new deal with the Port Elizabeth-based outfit.
BUHLE MKHWANAZI – BIDVEST WITS
Another high-profile Wits player linked with Chiefs is the Bafana centre-back, who could be too expensive for the Braamfontein-based outfit’s new owners to maintain.
PETER SHALULILE – HIGHLANDS PARK
With the likes of Samir Nurkovic, Leonardo Castro and Bernard Parker, one can argue that Kaizer Chiefs have more than enough stocks up front, but Peter Shalulile is a name that has been bandied about as a possible addition to Ernst Middendorp’s squad.
The Namibian international is among the PSL golden boot contenders, and is rumoured to have also attracted interest from their biggest rivals.
