Chicco Twala back again

The 55-year-old I Need Some Money hitmaker has revealed that he’s adding the final touches to a feature film titled Mama Action, which encourages active citizenship by speaking out against bad governance.

Music veteran Sello “Chicco” Twala has taken a critical stance against state corruption and looting. “I want to be the first one to break the silence and join President Cyril Ramaphosa and all those who have been speaking out against corruption.

“The movie targets corrupt individuals in government, who seem to think they are untouchable,” he said.

He said it was inspired by many artists’ fear to blow the whistle.

Chicco insisted: “I know some of us are scared of speaking out against corrupt politicians. “We fear that if we do so, the government will shut us out and not give us tenders or even book us to perform at government and political events.”

He added that the project was also inspired by the spirit of Nigerian Afro-beat musician, Fela Kuti.

“One of my mentors is the late Nigerian music legend Fela Kuti, who never minced his words when it came to criticising and exposing corrupt government officials.

“His hit song International Thief is one of the most blatant attacks of corruption which ultimately landed him in jail,” he said. “I think it’s time we followed in his footsteps and speak out.”
