Buthelezi calls on men to protect women

Former IFP leader, Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi says this year’s reed dance event has been overshadowed by the spate of violence against women and children.

Thousands of Zulu maidens took part in the annual reed dance in KwaZulu-Natal.

The maidens presented reeds to King Goodwill Zwelithini at his Enyokeni palace in Nongoma, as a symbol of their virginity.

The cultural event spans over a week.

“It pains me that this year’s reed dance takes place under the shadow of violence against women and children which rising across our country,” Buthelezi said.

“Which is an indictment to all of us as men and as a male, I feel very ashamed, I am ashamed and I apologise on behalf of the men.

“God created us in his image but we have turned to be monsters. We cannot meet without speaking against this evil, for it is taking the lives of those we have been tasked to protect.”

Zwelithini says the world is laughing at us because we are fighting each other.

He was referring to recent attacks on foreign nationals in Gauteng this week.
