Blow for soccer lovers as CAF postpones AfCON Finals

Blow for soccer lovers as CAF postpones AfCON Finals. CAF has postponed AFCON and CHAN tournaments. The Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) tournament has been postponed by one year. Afcon finals have been postponed to January 2022 following a decision made by CAF’s executive board at an online meeting held on Tuesday.

The tournaments were postponed as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. AFCON finals were set for Cameroon from January 6 to February 6, 2021. The 2020 African Nations Championship (CHAN) finals which were initially set for September this year in Cameroon will now take place in January 2021.

CAF’s executive committee met in an online conference on Tuesday and decided to postpone the final to January/February 2022 in Cameroon. The executive also made decisions regarding other competitions.

The 2020 Women’s AFCON will not be played this year. The decision to scrap the tournament this year is to make way for the launch of the African Women’s Champions League in 2021.

Regarding inter-club competitions, the CAF Champions League and Confederation Cup semi-finals will no longer be contested over two-legs for home and away fixtures. CAF Champions League semi-finals will be held in Cameroon, in September, while the CAF Confederation Cup will be hosted in Morocco.

The decision by CAF will likely result in a pile-up of fixtures as there are still four rounds of AFCON qualifiers to play.

On Monday, CAF released a 27-page document titled “CAF Guidelines to Resume Football in Africa”. The document is meant to guide the Member Associations on the restart of football activities on the African continent.

The plan also highlights effective and continuous medical assessment (testing) of players and officials, guidelines for training sessions, disinfection of sporting facilities, as well as strict adherence to the global preventive protocols.
