It’s international award season again and this year our very own Mufasa, aka Cassper Nyovest, and gqom duo Distruction Boyz will represent Mzansi at the BET Awards.
This is the first time that the international category combined both UK and African artists to compete for the award. It is also the first time that the award winner will be announced on the main stage.
Cassper, whose “issues” with the South African Music Awards are public knowledge, explained why he was excited about his third BET nod.
He said the market was different and he felt the third nod showed his consistency.
“For me this (nomination) means we are moving in the right direction. It’s not just Africa, it’s not two categories anymore, and it’s everybody. I am also familiar with everyone I am nominated with. This shows my consistency and I feel like in an industry like ours where people are around for two to three years then disappear, it means I’m moving in the right direction.”
Cassper and Distruction Boyz join Nigerian musicians Davido and Tiwa Savage as well as Congolese star Fally Ipupa to represent Africa. The five artists are also competing with French performers Booba and Dadju and UK acts J Hus, Stefflon Don and Stormzy for the Best International Act Award.
Distruction Boyz also talked about how amazing it feels to be nominated for a BET with their very first album, when they’ve had to endure a lot of criticism for their choice of music. The said they were just happy to spread the gqom fever across the globe.
“I think what we are going to try and use as a weapon, is our music. It’s fresh, it’s new and it’s edgy, so getting performances and stuff like that is going to spread the news of gqom and spread the South African vibes. So we gong there for the music and nothing else.”
