Baroka beats Kaizer Chiefs 1-0

Relegation-threatened Baroka claimed a massive scalp by beating Kaizer Chiefs 1-0 in an Absa Premiership encounter at FNB Stadium on Saturday evening.

In the 12th minute, Baroka gave Chiefs a scare. Matome Mabebe got in on the overlap down the left-hand side and whipped in a dangerous cross which was deflected narrowly wide of the post by Onkabetse Makgantai.

Baorka pushed again as Mabeba delivered an excellent cross on to the head of Lawrence Ntswane, but the Bakgaga ba ga Mphahlele striker headed over the crossbar when he should have at least made the keeper work.

Soon after, Bernard Parker latched on to a clearance from goalkeeper Bruce Bvuma and headed the ball intelligently in to the path of Philani Zulu, whose volley trickled inches wide of the post.

Chiefs were knocking the ball around nicely but Baroka were getting plenty of numbers behind the ball. Baroka’s gameplan was to defend as a compact unit and break on the counter-attack whenever possible.

Six minutes into the second half, the hosts won a free-kick after Maluleka was clipped on the ankle. Parker’s delivery was narrowly headed over by Ryan Moon. Soon after, Moon had a golden opportunity to give Ernst Middendorp’s side the lead. Parker played a defence-splitting and Moon rounded the keeper but could only hit the side-netting from a tight angle.

Bakgaga almost profited from a sweeping counter-attack on the hour-mark, but Tsidisho Patjie went for goal instead of squaring the ball to the unmarked Ntsande and his shot was well blocked by Kgotso Moleko.

Patjie made amends in the 65th minute, curling a delicious free-kick from 25 yards out in to the top left-hand corner after Andriamirado “Dax” Andrianarimanan was guilty of giving away the free-kick with a studs-up challenge on Mduduzi Mdantsane.

Some slick interplay from Chiefs enabled Pule Ekstein to find space in the area but his snapshot lacked power and Elvis Chipezeze got down low to his right to make what was a relatively comfortable save in the end.

Despite spending the majority of the rest of the game in Bakgaga’s final third, Chiefs failed to create any more clear-cut scoring opportunities as they fell to their third defeat under the mentorship of Middendorp.
