COVID-19: Association of Mineworkers wants miners protected

The Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union says its concerned mining companies could use the COVID-19 pandemic as an excuse to lay off workers. The union says the government must be strict in enforcing regulations to protect employees.

“Furthermore, as we know that the COVID-19 impact on employment because when we move maybe to stage 3, surely it will give an opportunity to restructure and use COVID-19 as an excuse to retrench workers.

I think it is an opportunity for government to compel these companies not to export a 100% of the materials to Europe but let’s work on a ratio of 60/40″, said Amcu president Joseph Mathunjwa.
