Anga Makubalo is the new Ambassador of Soviet Denim

We need our own thing. The ladies have #HotGirlSummer, what do the guys have?” Anga Makubalo takes a moment to think about this question deeply, while we are seated in a back room at Boss Models in Johannesburg. He smiles, genuinely puzzled, before coining the phrase that would go on to shape the rest of our interview.

This was the phrase that the actor and singer used to describe exactly what he has coming ahead of this year’s festive season. A summer filled with sizzling-hot masculinity through his brand new partnership with leading denim brand, Soviet. Anga and Soviet have a great history, having partnered up for the first time in 2017 before renewing that deal again in 2019/2020. When I asked him how happy he was to be working with the leading denim brand for the second time, he could barely hold back his excitement when he said,

“Me and Soviet first linked up two years ago when we did something that South Africa had never seen before. It was incredible to see the way people wanted to know how they could dress like me and how, with this partnership, they finally got to.

So when it came time to review this deal for 2019 it was a no-brainer. We are excited to show you what’s about to come! Anga is a massive denim lover. In fact, during our conversation, he even showed me a few pictures of the latest denim items in his wardrobe. I asked him if his love for denim culture made the Soviet deal a perfect match. I have been a denim lover all my life, from the days I used to get jeans and jackets as a child. The great thing about denim is that it has never gone out of fashion in South Africa.”

Once the ice had broken, we spoke specifically about the renewed deal with Soviet and what customers could look for. This time around with Soviet we are going to take it to the next level. There are some really cool items which are about to drop that I can’t say too much just yet! But you can expect a shoe, a few articles of clothing and … yeah, you’ll see very soon!” It’s one thing for Anga, who is renowned for always looking good, to release a line of clothes for us to buy. But how can we ensure that we look as good as he does on as consistent a basis? The former Generations star let us in on his secret:

“The thing is, looking good is a very deliberate action. For instance, I might buy 5 pairs of jeans but not all of them will fit the way I want to. So what I do is I take them to a tailor who can adjust them for me. At the end of the day, not everything fits and it’s up to you to make sure that it looks amazing on you. At some point during our chat, I took a moment to applaud the 32-year-old for not only forging an incredible career, but staying out of trouble while doing so too. I asked him if he is happy to be Anga Makubalo at this point in time:

“I have to be honest, it doesn’t always feel like it! I mean, now I can say I am happy with the work I put in, but for a long time I would get compliments and not be as confident as I am now. But now, it feels really good to be me!” We couldn’t let the legend-in-the-making head off before we found out a bit more about what’s to come. Luckily, he was in a generous mood. I have quite a bit up my sleeve in the coming months. Some I’m allowed to say, others I have to keep under wraps for now. All I can say is that fans are going to get a little bit of me, a little bit of Naaqmusiq, a little bit of me with brands… there’s a good mixture!”

So… about that catch phrase! We put Anga on the spot and asked him to come up with a one-line-catch-phrase that men could take as much pride in during the upcoming summer camps. Perhaps he should consider a job in social media because his suggestion was spot on. I think it has to be Sizzling Man Summer! We are going to be hot, we are going to be confident, we are going to be fantastic. Men are going to make things hot this summer so #SizzlingManSummer or #SMS works perfectly!
