Activist offers to buy Joburg Zoo elephants

A global environmental activist has offered to pay R1-million for the freedom of the Joburg Zoo elephants. John Varty says has offered to pay for the three elephants.

This comes after a lot of outrage over the zoo’s decision to keep them in a captive environment.

The National Council of SPCA has expressed concern over the situation and called the zoo irresponsible for keeping the animals there.

The City of Johannesburg insists the Zoo followed all the correct procedures.

Rights groups have previously pointed out that elephants are very social, saying zoos can’t provide all the space they need to exercise. The Zoo insists the two wild elephants have reintegrated well into their new home.
