11 arrested for public violence in Alexandra

Police have arrested 11 suspects following violent protests in Alexandra. Disgruntled residents brought the township to a standstill.

They claim illegal dwellings in the area are mushrooming. Gauteng police spokesperson Kay Makhubele says more police are being deployed to the area to restore stability.

“We have arrested suspects for public violence. No one should damage people’s properties,” Makhubele said.

The residents have dismissed claims that the shutdown is motivated by party politics.

Ward councillor Tefo Raphadu says their grievances are genuine and beyond political affiliations. Residents in the area have scheduled a public meeting for Friday at 10 am at San Kopano Community Centre in Alexandra.

They are calling on Johannesburg mayor Herman Mashaba to address them.

JMPD spokesperson Wayne Minnaar says more officials will be deployed to the area.
