Zimbabwe’s Madam Boss beats Lasizwe, Mihlali, and Boity to win Africa Social Star of the year at the People’s Choice Awards

Zimbabwean content creator and TikTok sensation Madam Boss was named this year’s Africa Social Star at the People’s Choice Awards

The influencer, whose real name is Tyra Chikocho, was announced the winner on Tuesday, 30 November.

Kenya’s Azziad Nasenya and South Africa’s Witney Ramabulana were placed second and third, respectively.

They were nominated alongside South African social media personalities Lasizwe Dambuza and Mihlali Ndamase, rapper and reality TV star Boity Thulo, as well as Nigerian talents rapper Falz and digital content creator The Odditty.

Madam Boss began her entertainment career as a gospel singer before her comedy skits started going viral on social media. She became the first Zimbabwean comedian to pass 1 million followers on Facebook.

She has starred on productions such as Nollywood series The Offspring and South African telenovela uBettina Wethu on SABC1.

When receiving her award, Madam Boss thanked E!

“I can’t believe it! I don’t know how to explain how I’m feeling right now, I’m so emotional, I’m crying and very happy at the same time. I’m just a girl from a rural area and now my name is among the best stars in the industry, thank you so much E!” she said.

Last year’s African Social Star category was won by Kenyan comedian Elsa Majimbo, while former Miss Universe Zozi Tunzi was placed third.

Springbok captain Siya Kolisi was honoured as African Trailblazer of the Year in 2020, too.

The 2021 People’s Choice Awards will be broadcast on Tuesday, 7 December 2021 at 2am and will be repeated on Wednesday, 8 December at 8pm CAT on E! (DStv channel 124).
